Day 1
Lima, Peru

  • Arrival in Lima, Peru.

Lima

  • Breakfast at the Hotel
  • Half day Lima City tour: Cathedral, San Francisco Convent and Larco museum:
  • We will begin the visit of the city with an exploration of Colonial Lima. First, we will stop off at the Main Square, to explore it on foot and admire the exteriors of the Government Palace, the Cathedral, and the City Hall, all examples of Lima’s still-present colonial architectural opulence. We will visit the Cathedral; as walking through its numerous chapels, we’ll discover various architectural styles and learn about the religious history of Peru. We will continue with the visit to San Francisco Convent built in the 17th century, and its “Catacombs” ancient underground cemetery of Lima.
  • Afterwards, we will head to Larco Museum, an eighteenth-century Viceregal mansion that houses more than 3,000 years of Peru’s pre-Columbian history. The museum boasts a supremely fine collection of gold and silver jewellery and worship paraphernalia. The museum also contains a famous collection of erotic ceramic tomb art that gives insights into various aspects of pre-Columbian sexuality.
  • Finally, we will begin a journey through the streets of modern Lima as head toward the most traditional of the residential zones of the capital: San Isidro, the heart of the city’s financial district; and Miraflores, a perfect spot to enjoy wonderful views of the Pacific Ocean.
  • Rest of the evening is free for you to explore Miraflores neighbourhood on your own.

Day 3
Lima – Puerto Maldonado – Peruvian Amazon

  • Breakfast at the Hotel
  • Transfer to Lima airport. Fly to Puerto Maldonado.
  • Inkaterra Hacienda Concepcion Lodge: 3Days/2Nights Shared Program:
  • Upon our arrival in Puerto Maldonado, we will be met at the airport and escorted on the 25-minute boat ride on the Madre de Dios River to the Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción lodge. After lunch, we will take a walk along the Concepción trail system, where we can explore and learn more about primary and secondary forest, their vegetation, uses, the changes caused by humankind, and the importance of the forests to the rest of the world.
  • In the late afternoon, we will set off on an excursion by motorized canoe to learn more about the nighttime forest. We will learn about this ecosystem composed of Amazonian gullies, how the forest’s nocturnal fauna behaves, and even take the time to enjoy the sight of the southern hemisphere’s constellations.

Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción (Standard Room)

Day 4
Peruvian Amazon

  • Breakfast at Hotel
  • During the morning, we will take a forest trail walk to Lake Sandoval in the Tambopata National Reserve. We will explore the lake’s waters in a wooden canoe. This lake is home to many endangered species, such as giant river otters, red howler monkeys, red-bellied macaws, anacondas, and side-necked turtles.
  • After lunch, we will literally walk through the tropical forest canopy for around a quarter of a mile, crossing a network of bridges that connect eight observation platforms. This excursion offers the prospect of spotting colorful toucans, woodpeckers and trogons, as well as monkeys, sloths, and many other Amazon species.

Inkaterra Hacienda Concepción (Standard Room)

Day 5
Puerto Maldonado – Cusco – Sacred Valley

  • Breakfast at the accommodation
  • There will be time to enjoy a full breakfast before we leave. A 25-minute boat ride on the Madre de Dios River will take us to Puerto Maldonado, where we will visit the Butterfly House. Peru has more species of butterfly than anywhere else in the world, with 3700 known species. Many of these can be seen at the Butterfly House, where these fascinating insects can be observed in all their rich variety and extraordinary beauty.
  • Transfer to Puerto Maldonado Airport. Fly to Cusco. NOTE: At this stage, non-Stop Flight from Puerto Maldonado to Cusco operates on MON-WED and SATURDAYS only. Plan the travel dates accordingly.
  • Arrival in Cusco airport. Transfer to Sacred Valley. On route you will have the chance to visit a local market, then arrival to the hotel to acclimatize to the high altitude.

Day 6
Sacred Valley

  • Breakfast at the accommodation
  • Full day tour to Sacred Valley: Maras’ Salt pans, Moray and Ollantaytambo Fortress.
  • This morning, we will continue the trip toward the Sacred Valley. We will cross the Urubamba River and head towards Salt Pans of Maras. The sight of this still-operating salt mine, in use since Incan times, will amaze us the stark white of the steeply descending salt pans juxtaposed against the green of the surrounding mountain slopes.
  • The journey will continue on until we reach the archaeological site of Moray. Used as an agricultural testing ground, the site’s system of circular terraces descends 490 feet (150m) from where we will stand, serving as a perfect testament to the level of advancement achieved by the Incas, who excelled at building masterful constructions in harmony with nature.
  • Lunch at a local restaurant (included).
  • Finally, we will visit one of the last remaining Incan towns, Ollantaytambo, which was once fiercely guarded by a massive fortress. We will discover the large archaeological complex of what used to serve as a wayside inn for royal delegations on long journeys. Surviving structures here include multiple walls and towers that were used to protect the citadel from possible invasions.

Day 7
Sacred Valley – Inca Trail (Trek Begins)

  • Breakfast at the accommodation
  • SACRED VALLEY- WAYLLABAMBA: We will head towards KM 82. We will make a small stop in the picturesque town of Ollantaytambo, to take pictures of the fortress and rest a moment. Afterwards, we will continue our journey to finally reach KM 82. At this point, we will find the checkpoint to the Inca Trail. Once the permits and passports have been inspected, we will cross a bridge that will take us to the other side of the river where we will begin to ascend parallel to the Urubamba river.
  • In this first section of the Inca Trail, we will visit the small community of Miskay (2650 m.a.s.l), to meet the villagers and taste the popular drink known as chicha. Later we will begin to ascend towards a small plateau, where we will be able to observe in the skirts of a mountain the beautiful Inca construction known as Patallacta (2750 mtrs above sea level [m.a.s.l]).
  • We will continue walking for approximately 2 hours until a very beautiful point where we will stop for lunch and rest. After lunch we will continue walking through an area full of vegetation, where it is very likely to see the beautiful giant hummingbird native to this region, we will arrive at our first camp, located in the area of Wayllabamba at 3000 m.a.s.l..
  • Maximum altitude: 3000 M / Minimum Altitude: 2650 M / Total Distance: 12 km / Approximate time of walk: 5 to 6 hours.

Day 8
Inca Trail Trek

  • Breakfast at the campsite.
  • WAYLLABAMBA – PACAYMAYO: We will start walking through a narrow path full of vegetation, passing by a small bridge that will take us through a cloud forest. In this section of the trail we will have to climb many steps.
  • Following the route, we will arrive at the sector of Llulluchapampa, here we will make a brief stop to rest and prepare to ascend the highest point of our walk, the famous pass Warmihuañusca, located at 4200 m.a.s.l. Once we have conquered the summit, we will be rewarded with a beautiful view of the Andean snow-capped mountains.
  • We will descend through a winding valley until we reach the point where we will stop for lunch. During this last walk it is possible to observe several types of wild birds. Finally, we will arrive at the Pacaymayo camp (3500 m.a.s.l), where we will spend the night.
  • Maximum altitude: 4200 M / Minimum Altitude: 3000 M / Total Distance: 13 km / Approximate time of walk: 6 to 7 hours.

Day 9
Inca Trail Trek

  • Breakfast at the campsite.
  • PACAYMAYO – WIÑAYWAYNA: We will start our hike up a steep path. Shortly we will arrive at the ruins of Runkurakay located at 3800 m.a.s.l, an oval shape Inca construction that is believed to have served as an Inca watchtower. Then we will continue until we reach the pass of Runkurakay (3950 m.a.s.l). During this hike we will find a small lagoon where if we are lucky, we can see Andean geese and other species of Andean birds.
  • After the pass, we will descend to a valley full of vegetation where we will visit the ruins of Sayacmarka (3624 m.a.s.l) an Inca construction, built on a very steep slope, surrounded by a chain of mountains. After visiting Sayacmarka, we will continue descent towards the cloud forest, to reach the ruins of Phuyupatamarka, impressive fountains and water channels that are spectacular works of hydraulic Inca engineering.
  • We will continue descending until the ruins of Wiñaywayna (2700 m.a.s.l). After exploring every corner of Wiñaywayna we will head to our last camp, which is located a few meters from the place. This will be the night in which we will have to say goodbye to our porters, so we will hold a small party to thank everyone for sharing this beautiful experience with us.
  • Maximum altitude: 3900 M / Minimum Altitude: 2700 M / Total Distance: 16 km / Approximate time of walk: 7 to 8 hours.

Day 10
Inca Trail Trek (final day) – Machu Picchu – Aguas Calientes

  • WIÑAYWAYNA – MACHU PICCHU: On this last day we will get up very early, at 03:30 am. Then we will go quickly to the control gate to enter the path that will take us directly to the citadel of Machu Picchu. After having walked for about 1 hour and a half, we will arrive at Inti Punko, or Sun Gate, a magnificent point from which you can see the citadel of Machu Picchu in the distance.
  • At this point we can rest for a few minutes and take pictures before finally descend to reach the recognized, as one of the seventh wonders of the world: Machu Picchu. Our guide will lead us through the most impressive sectors of this beautiful Inca citadel. This will take us approximately 2 hours, after which we will have free time to explore the city each by our own, taste and preference.
  • Finally we will return on the bus to the town of Aguas Calientes, to enjoy our lunch included at Café Inkaterra Restaurant.
  • Afternoon at leisure to recover and relax. Visit the hot springs in Aguas Calientes, a relaxing way to end the trek, only 10 minutes from the village center. Eentrance fee is s/10.00 (Peruvian Soles). Towels can be hired in Aguas Calientes.

Day 11
Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco

  • Breakfast at your hotel.
  • You will get the chance to see Machu Picchu in the morning (unguided).
  • In the afternoon, we will return to Aguas Calientes train station and catch the VISTADOME SCENIC TRAIN to Cusco.
  • On arrival, transfer to your hotel.

Day 12
Cusco

  • Breakfast at your hotel.
  • Half day Special Cusco City tour: We will visit the Fortress of Sacsayhuaman a colossal structure built with huge carved rocks jointed with absolute accuracy, this astounding sample of the Incan military architecture is, undoubtedly, the greatest architectonic work of the Tahuantinsuyo. We will make a short stop at Cristo Blanco, a large statue where we will enjoy a panoramic view of the city.Then, we will explore the San Pedro Market, Cusco’s main street market, inundated with aromas, tastes, sights, and colors of the local products of the Cusco region.
  • Afterward, visit the Qoricancha (which means room of gold in Quechua), a temple dedicated to the Sun god. Legend has it that its inner walls were once completely lined with gold.
  • Finally, will head to Cusco Cathedral. We will take a guided tour to discover the mysteries of it and admire its lovely atria and priceless 17th and 18th century paintings of the Cusco school.
  • Rest of the afternoon is free for you to explore Cusco on your own.
